“Connections between generations are essential for the mental health and stability of a nation.”
Margaret Mead was deeply aware of the importance of past, present, and future possibilities. We have a need for all, regardless of age, to connect with each other.
The Legacy Project offers information impacting all generations and highlights how historically, families took care of each other. The prospect of caring for an older family member or loved one was a natural cycle. Elders took care of children while their parents were working, and it was normal for children, as they matured, to care for older relatives or family friends. A first-generation taught a second generation how to perform basic tasks and offered support from life experiences. Today, a changing world has the second generation challenged in passing information to the next, or third, generation. Who is responsible for continuing the evolution of information? The first family members… Seniors.
There are benefits for Seniors when interacting with younger children. Feelings of a “second chance” or “new legacy” while growing self-confidence. Those who are active with children are healthier and happier than those who isolate themselves. Children, too, benefit from the patience and undivided time an elder gives them. Studies have shown children who are mentored by an older adult are 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs; 27% less likely to begin using alcohol; 52% less likely to skip school.
Intergenerational Connections
Intergenerational relationships grow from many opportunities and are not limited to only family circles. Schools offer volunteer grandparent opportunities in classrooms. Mentoring programs in communities have a huge impact on the lives of both young and old. Life does not end at a certain age. We are all young souls in older bodies and have much to give the world.
