Lifelong Learning for Seniors
We never stop learning. Each day brings an opportunity to broaden horizons, gather an important piece of history, or learn a piece of trivia to astound friends and family. Learning changes the world.
Seniors are reaching out to many educational events designed just for those way past the traditional education enrollment age with Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). Over 125 sites exist in the United States. For a small fee, mature students are offered a diverse range of courses, from the history of our country’s political parties to staging a theme party of their own. A smorgasbord of interactive courses also exists. Tour a museum, go behind the scenes at a zoo, or plan your own landscaping, plus many more “outside the box” courses.
Learning does keep Seniors young at heart. Social interaction with peers is inherent when picking up new skills. Volunteering at Habit for Humanity, participating in a church organization, delivering Meals on Wheels, or helping at a local thrift store for those less fortunate… are the stepping stones to understanding the diverse cultures and backgrounds often misunderstood.
Universities and colleges in many communities offer tuition discounts to nontraditional (think Seniors) students. Virginia Hislop, age 105, received her master’s degree from Stanford in June of 2024. According to her, she “waited a long time for this.”
Benefits Of Lifelong Learning
Memory Cherish sums up the benefits of learning better than this writer could ever attempt. Peruse the following to start thinking about why learning is so valuable.
- Creates new friendships: Classes bring together people with common interests.
- Encourages community participation: Learners feel part of something bigger.
- Improves mental well-being: Combats isolation and promotes happiness.
- Sustains accountability: Make committing to learning easier with peer support.
The next time signing up for a course, think of the potential lifelong connections possible. Sure, Seniors will learn something new, but the friends gained? Priceless.
