A New Year arrived only a few days ago, bringing good wishes and goals to weave the best of 2021 with new 2022 opportunities.

New Year Resolutions

An excellent place to start is at the table. Holidays traditionally present Seniors and loved ones with an abundance of sweets and carb loaded dishes. Push those foods away and picture a plate designed to stimulate immune systems and strengthen muscles. Veggies and fruits should cover half of a plate, whole grains a fourth, and protein the remaining fourth. Eating right is a first resolution and leads naturally to a second…

Exercise… we all love to exercise, right? If the answer is no, perhaps a different approach is needed. Try a variety of movements…the National Institute of Health recommends approximately 22 minutes daily by using five different approaches:

  • Aerobic/cardio… walk
  • Muscle strengthening… lift weights or soup cans
  • Improve Balance… yoga, tai chi
  • Increase flexibility… stretch
  • Combine more than one activity… dance, play pickleball, join a fitness program

Remember to start slowly. Consult a physician if there are health concerns.

While contemplating the previous two resolutions for 2022, a third resolution was already in effect… brain stimulation. Brains become clearer when engaged and developing new memory cells. Try a new interest or hobby. Choose a book from a different genre. Enroll in a class and learn something new. A brain accustomed to change is more adept at managing stress and challenge.

A fourth resolution is to think positive. The past few years have brought a tremendous amount of worry and concern. Those who remain healthy turned their backs to negativity. Be positive… the sun still shines, progress has been made on the pandemic, families continue to love, and Seniors with their loved ones still matter.

Last, but not least, resolve to laugh. Laughter boosts immunity, kills pain, and engages both bodies and brains. A good belly laugh tones abdominal muscles and is a productive cardio workout. Laughter is good medicine and great for health.
